Showup is a private accountability app for small groups of friends who want to work out consistently. This policy explains what Showup collects on the website and in the iPhone app, what it is used for, and who can see it. Showup was previously called GymBet, and this policy covers both.
Account. Your username, your display name, and your PIN. We never store your PIN itself; only a one-way scrambled version (a scrypt hash) that lets us check it. We also keep a record of your sign-in sessions (a scrambled token, when it was created, and when it was last used). To slow down PIN guessing we keep scrambled records of recent sign-in attempts for up to an hour; they cannot be read back as a username or an address. When you create an account we record which version of the Terms of Use you accepted and when.
Check-ins. The photo you take when you check in, the time our server received it, the calendar date in your group's time zone, and the location your device reports: latitude, longitude, and, when available, its accuracy, altitude, heading, and speed. Shortly after a check-in, our server also looks up a place name (a city or a nearby place) for those coordinates and saves it with the check-in.
Gym visits (iPhone app). When a visit starts and ends, how it ended (you tapped a button, the maximum length was reached, or your phone concluded you left), the maximum length you chose, and any change you make to the end time.
Groups. The groups you create or join, your role and membership dates, the weekly visit goal and Risk points your group set, weekly results, point moves, and Group Gap. Also anything you add: captions, comments, reactions, and flags you raise.
Safety. The members you block, which only you can see, and any report you file, with the note you may add. Reports are seen only by the people who run Showup, never by the member reported, your group, or your group leader.
Notifications (iPhone app). If you allow notifications, we keep a token that Apple gives your phone so that we can send to it, and which kinds you chose to receive. The token is removed when you sign out, when Apple says it no longer works, and when you delete your account.
On your phone only. Your session token is kept in the iPhone Keychain. During a visit, the app keeps the point where you checked in and your recent location readings on the phone, to work out whether you have left. These are never sent to us and are deleted when the visit ends.
Basic technical data. Like any website, our hosting provider's servers record standard request information such as your IP address, the page requested, and the time. We use it to keep the service running and secure.
At check-in, Showup asks for your location while you are using the app. A check-in needs a location, and it is saved with the check-in as evidence for your group. Showup never compares it against a list of approved gyms; your group decides what counts.
During a visit, the iPhone app offers to watch your location in the background so it can end your visit when you leave. This needs the "Always" location permission, which you can decline; a visit works without it, and you can end it with a button or it ends by itself after its maximum length.
You can turn location off for Showup at any time in the iPhone Settings app.
Showup uses the camera only when you take a check-in photo. It does not use the camera in the background, and it does not read your photo library. Check-in photos are private to your groups and are never public.
We do not sell your information or share it with advertisers or data brokers.
These providers process data only to provide their service to us. We may also disclose information if the law requires it.
Showup points are closed, nonredeemable activity scores with no cash value.
Groups set a Goal and Risk in points. Showup calculates and stores Safe, Drop, Bonus, Score, point moves, and Group Gap. These records cannot be redeemed or exchanged for anything of value.
Showup does not collect an email address, so there is no way for us to recover a forgotten PIN. If you lose your PIN you will need to create a new account.
PINs and sign-in tokens are stored only in scrambled form, photos are kept private, and connections to Showup are encrypted. No system is perfectly secure, so please choose a PIN that is hard to guess and do not share it.
Showup is not intended for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from them.
If we change how Showup handles information, we will update this page and the date at the top, and we will tell you in the app if the change is significant.
